LITHOGRAPHS

The Fondation Oskar Kokoschka holds almost all of the artist’s graphic works. Here some masterpieces.

All the important series are represented. From his early years in Vienna, Kokoschka favours the technique of lithography. From time to time, he also engraves some drypoints on copper.

Initially, Kokoschka produces stylized works for the Wiener Werkstätte. The postcards and posters are followed by thematic cycles illustrating his own literary works (Die chinesische Mauer, Der gefesselte Kolumbus, Bachkantate, Allos Makar, Hiob, Orpheus und Eurydike, Ann Eliza Reed, Comenius), those of various older or more contemporary authors (Lob des hohen Verstandes, Irische Legende, King Lear, Un ballo in maschera, Saul and David, The Frogs, Penthesilea, The Women of Troy, Einstein überquert die Elbe bei Hamburg, Pan) or focusing on themes close to his heart (Bekenntnis zu Hellas, Apulia, Die Odyssee, Marrakesch, Manhattan, London from the River Thames, Jerusalem Faces).

The entire graphic oeuvre is published in the catalogue raisonné by Hans M. Wingler and Friedrich Welz:
